Chef Silvia Medrano-Edelstein has worked with international James Beard chefs in Honolulu, San Francisco and Atlanta and was a Culinary Degree Program International Cuisine instructor at The Art Institutes of Atlanta with a Sommelier certification. She is also a Certified Master Gardener and grows edible flowers and boutique greens which are used to spectacular effects in her own cooking school, Word of Mouth Cooking Club based in Candler Park. On school days, she may be found walking her 7-year-old son to Mary Lin Elementary, playing her ukulele.
Her Filipino heritage, with its colonial Spanish culinary roots, and her stint at Pura Vida Latin Tapas Restaurant in Atlanta, has excited her about creating a nutritious Primavera Preschool menu that reflects its own global Spanish cuisine: Old World, South American, Afro-Caribbean, Cuban and Tex-Mex cuisines will all be on the table.
She began her cooking school when she realized there weren’t foodie classes for kids her son’s age. With kids able to name popular cooking competition shows, chef-driven food market culture and evolving children’s palates, she realized the time had come. Her teaching technique presents updated foodie dishes and plating techniques using squirt bottles and puree swatches to spark the desire to achieve higher-level understanding of flavor layering and artistry. But more importantly, it comes with a philosophy of mindfulness in the kitchen, cooking by taste and observation and not, as is traditionally taught, by recipes. She is thrilled to work with the Primavera team!
